Ebook About A novel about secrets and revenge by the number one Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Missing Sister. It’s only by confronting who she was then that she can understand who she is now.I was born in captivity…Two decades ago Marissa Mo escaped a basement prison—the only home she’d ever known. At twenty-seven, Marissa’s moved beyond the trauma and is working under a new name as a freelance photographer. But when she accepts a job covering a string of macabre murders in Portland, it’s impossible for Marissa not to remember.Everything is eerily familiar. The same underground lairs. Sad trinkets and toys left behind, identical to those Marissa had as a child. And then there is the note meant just for her that freezes Marissa’s blood: See you soon, Missy. To determine the killer’s next move, Marissa must retrieve her long-forgotten memories and return to a past she’s hidden away. But she won’t be facing her fears alone. Someone is waiting for her in the dark.Book Lies We Bury Review :
This novel illustrates the power of the mind and how memories can resurface at a moment's notice... Alternating between the present and the past, the reader is instantly drawn into a tense thriller.Claire, as she is now known. was imprisoned in a basement with her two sisters. Twenty years ago she was known as Marissa Mo. At the age of 7, she escaped along with her sisters, Janessa and Lily. Mama Rosemary was her protector and Chet, was the man who held them hostage. While reading this novel, I experienced such empathy for these young girls. More often than not, they were hungry and frightened. Mama Rosemary does her very best to keep them safe in this crowded space.Fast forward to the 20th anniversary of their escape, and Claire is a photographer working for the Portland Post. A mystery begins to unfold after a murder occurs. The question is whether or not she will be able to solve the mystery presented to her or not. And, the note left on her windshield makes her even more wary of her surroundings..and hints at things to come. The mind is indeed so powerful and sometimes it only takes a smell or a visual object to trigger events from days long ago. Claire definitely has many memories from her dark days and yes, they do resurface.A very tense novel which will keep the reader guessing until the very end. One quote that I liked 'Secrets have a way of breaking free'. So true, so very true.Indeed a well written novel and characters are well developed. The plot is multi-layered as well and downright scary. This is one of my favorite First Reads for many months...And, glad that I selected this one. Most highly recommended. I got this book as my March First Reads. I really try to finish these books since I don’t like to review a book I haven’t finished, and so that I can leave an honest review when I do.I wanted to like this book. When I realized I wasn’t going to like it, I wanted to finish it. That didn’t happen either. After the first few chapters I was already having issues with the book, but was mildly interested enough in knowing who was contacting Claire and murdering people, that I figured I’d be able to finish. But the more I read, the clearer it became that I wouldn’t be able to.The main problem I have with this book is that we hear a lot about how Claire is jumping at shadows real or imagined, yet she is trespassing looking for bodies, exposing them when she finds them, and taking pictures of them, all with no character development that would lead to or explain that kind of behavior. We’re told at one point that she’s terrified the police will find out that she’s discovered a murder victim before they do, yet she uploads a picture of that victim to a reverse image search, using free wi-fi at a bagel shop.I was never drawn in, never cared about any of the characters, and only mildly cared about the story. All in all, just too much suspension of disbelief, too many eye rolls and head shakes for me to continue with this book. Life is just too short, and my time too precious to read a book I absolutely don’t like.
